Megavikend is a weekend-long international educational event, which belongs to one of the most important in the whole AFS year.

The volunteers not only from the Czech Republic, but also from all the other European countries, have a chance to meet new people and to pick up new skills during Friday’s welcoming programme, Saturday’s workshop blocks and Sunday’s relaxing morning.

The whole event is composed of workshops and lectures in both Czech and English. Each volunteer has the option to choose a course topic, which interests him/her the most and which will be the most beneficial to his/her theoretical and practical skills.

You can look forward a weekend packed up with great fun! The whole Megavikend is accompanied with supporting programme, and tons of games.

Information about Training for Trainers
For the first time, Training for Trainers (organized by our partner organization EFIL) will also take place before and during the Megavíkend. On Sunday afternoon, you will have a unique opportunity to find out how trainings are done in other European countries. We also have two Czech representatives in this Training for Trainers.

Emotions in advertising (English)

We’re surrounded by emotions every day. LIKE.
In our private lives. LOVE.
In school or workplace. WOW.
While watching cute kitten videos. HAHA.
When it’s raining. SAD.
And they don’t have your favorite chocolate in the store. ANGRY.

Why do we claim we favor logic over emotion but still buy another pair of shoes we don’t really need? Find out what role do emotions play in everyday advertising. No previous experience in marketing or psychology needed. Come and get emotional with us.

Školení Umění vyjednávat Ti pomůže rozklíčovat náročné situace v AFS a jinde. Těšíme se na Tebe, bude to jízda!

Danča a Tonda

Stopy na Zemi (Česky)

Víte, kolik toho ušly vaše boty, ještě než jste si je obuli? Kolik stop jste s nimi na Z/zemi zanechali? Samy bychom to rády věděly. Pojďte s námi zjistit více o tom, odkud pochází naše věci, co se nimi děje až nám doslouží a zamyslet se nad tim, jak zanechat méně stop na Zemi!

Bára a Katka

Michaela

Wait, what? (English)

Did you hear of the man walking on the moon?
And of spaghetti growing on trees?
And that the Yeti was finally caught?

Hearing new information usually causes some kind of reaction in us. Confusion, disbelief, anger, happiness – it can happen when we read a book, listen to the news or when a friend tells us some gossips. Sometimes, the reaction is so strong we forget to ask where that information even came from and whether or not it’s true. In times of (almost) constant exposure to media coverage and frequent use of terms like “fake news“, “filter bubble“ and “alternative facts“, it can be exhausting to keep up with all that’s going on and still keep questioning it.

Asking the right questions when presented with a new piece of information, analysing and evaluating the sources of said piece of information and making up your own mind – that can be hard. Questioning another person’s opinion without hurting their feelings – even harder. Together, we can try.

History of AFS; Journey into the world where border doesn’t stand for barrier (English)

What about taking a trip into the past over a hundred years ago? Say goodbye to 2018 and let me take you back in time to explore AFS foundations. Understanding the mission of U.S. volunteers in World War I (before U.S. entered the war in 1917) will lead us to the changes of AFS role throughout the 20th century. Moreover stopping for a couple of times will give us the opportunity to find out more about important milestones in AFS history.

#instagram (English)

#instamood #tbt # like4like #foodie #nofilter and many more… Yet unrecognized language, secret code, or knotty cypher? It is rather just another way of today common communication that only a certain group of people has a command of. The group that has more than a billion members since June. Have you been thinking of joining them as well and finding out more about how to use #hashtags properly, how to create a simple ad, or just getting some tips on attracting new insta followers? Or have you never heard of this social network and you want to change it? Whether you belong to any group, this training will enrich you with handy advices on how to use Instagram in both personal and professional life.

Pojďme se společně kriticky zamyslet nad zprávami, kontextem a prozkoumat českou realitu a její postoj k tématu migrace v rámci mezinárodních vztahů.

How to not make a difference (English)

Public space is an area where we can move freely, go where we want, be anonymous and most likely will not get called out on our actions. Wait, did I say public space? I mean the internet. What do those two have in common? They are the most likely places for people to experience discrimination.

People are sometimes quick to yell “I feel discriminated!“.

What does that mean again? Where else can it happen? How does it happen? What does discrimination even mean? Why do people do such a terrible thing? And can’t I call myself lucky because I will never be discriminated against? And can’t I call myself a good person because I would never, ever do that to somebody else?

Let’s talk about it.

Lisa

Sunday afternoon workshops

Workshops given by participants of the EFIL international Training for Trainers.

Inclusion and Discrimination (English)

Everyone agrees that there should be more inclusion and less discrimination. But how can you achieve it? Become aware of your own influence and get ideas how to do more.

Power in intercultural encounters (English)

Have you thought about your privileges before? What about those of your friends and people close to you? Get a sense of how our societies are built and how the system gives more or less power to people that belong to different groups.

Identities (English)

If someone asked you to define your identity, how would you do it? And do you think that you only have one fixed identity? Discover your identities and reflect on them.

Othering (English)

Have you ever heard of the “othering” mechanism? Do you know that othering is often the core and start of incomprehension and discrimination? Reflect on how you and all of us might play a role in othering, and what to do about it.

Media literacy in intercultural context (English)

Your view of the world, world’s problems and issues is very much influenced by media, even though you don’t always realize it. The world can seem much more negative than it really is, and you can do something about it!

Are you not sure that this is the right thing for you? Are you afraid of not knowing anyone? Loose all your insecurities and join us!
Megavikend will for sure amaze you and here is why:

1) it is one of the biggest AFS educational events from the whole Europe
2) workshops and trainings are run by experienced trainers
3) you will meet many interesting people, not only from the Czech republic
4) you will have a lot of fun and you will get to know the city like a local
5) and many more

This idea originated in 2007, when a group of young AFS volunteers decided to organize the first ever session of this educational event. For all the seasons, the goal of Megavikend remains the same – connect young people from the whole of Europe and let them educate themselves, share their knowledge, experience, tips and tricks, and thus participate on the development of our society. Every year, the event is visited by more than 120 participants from all around the globe. And you can be part of it!

Trainers

Tonda

Cooking lover, passionate camp leader, enthusiastic critical thinking supporter, occasional hitchhiker and high-quality coffee lover.

Míša

Enthusiastic traveler, member of Czech pool of trainers and International relations and European studies graduate, to whom few letters aka IPenNH13CAN have changed life.

Jana

I really wanted to be teacher and teach my two most favourite subjects; History and Geography. I was actually doing that some time but because I look pretty good in wellies and raincoat I swapped Czech classrooms for all the beauties of Scottish Highland.

There’s nothing more exciting for me than exploring history from architecture and memories of witnesses. I also love puppies, red wine and books.

One of my worst nightmares is shopping in the book store and being only allowed to pick one book there. The other ones are cinnamon on top of my cappuccino, cappuccino in non-reusable takeaway cup and plastic straw in my cappu… wait a sec… in any drink.

Hanka

My AFS journey has started four years ago by an accidental click on a website.

I am a coffee, books, food and social networks lover.

Thanks to #afseffect the endless choice of the right filter and collecting hearts on Instagram has finally started to make sense to me.

Michaela

Tea lover (except the fruit ones), also aviation and cats lover and language enthusiast, even though I do not speak many of them.

Michaela alias Míša alias Myš has been part of AFS since 2010, since the time she came back from here exchange year and by then she realized that AFS is love for life. She knows all Friends episodes and hopes to write a book one day.

Jarmila

My AFS journey has started by my daughter’s departure to Belgium and went on while we hosted Eri,  “our daughter” from Japan. Since 2013 I have been part of AFS. I volunteer for Prague AFS group, I am a contact person and host moms’ contact persons’ coordinator, I am a member of Czech pool of trainers and part-time employee in Czech main AFS office.

I love to read, travel, go roller skating, dance or use my creativity.

I am a relax techniques instructor and I am used to listen to other people. And in case you get hungry…I am able to prepare food for a quite large number of people and survive a night in a tent.

Danča

I have a three years experience in sales. Beside sales I am also engaged in online marketing and I am finishing my master degree at University of economics, Prague with major in Management and minor in Management psychology. Generally I train Improving communication types of workshops (verbal and non-verbal communication basics and negotiations). In my free time I enjoy broadering my knowledge, participating in marketing and communication workshops or saving different kinds of animals. I love moving forward, mainly myself and ideally the others as well.

Anežka and Petr

Anežka: During my studies I wasn’t sure what career would be right for me. So I took any chance to travel and live abroad. I discovered hygge in Denmark, unlimited fun in Italy, lack of freedom in China and Indian love in Spain. Even though I found my dream job in a media agency 3 years ago traveling remains a significant part of my life.

Petr: My trainer’s journey started on 2011 Megavikend and since then I’ve been most active in training AFS public relations. Many years before then, I wanted to be an astronaut, a dust man, a piano teacher, … finally I ended up in IT, always analysing, even when just having fun and listening to music. One day I heard this song in a radio that was mentioning Coca-Cola too much by my measure. So I started digging and learned it’s supposed to make you feel good, and then connect the good feeling to the product. Together with Anežka, my co-trainer, we found more examples of how emotions can influence your feelings about a product, built a training about the topic, hoping you’ll enjoy it.

Bára and Katka

Medical student and lawyer. We did not hear too much about ecology at school and maybe therefore we searched on our own to find out more about ecology issues and sustainability. Stimulated by illogical wastage and by people around us showing no interest about this topic we have decided to share our knowledge and tips with you.

Lisa

My name is Lisa, I’m from the beautiful town of Graz in Eastern Austria and ever since my exchange to Peru in 2006/07, I’ve been a volunteer! For the past five years, I’ve been a trainer with AFS Austria and EFIL and I really enjoy the places this takes me to. As I’m writing this, I’m also studying for my master’s exam, so by the time we meet in Prague, I’ll be done with university (I hope). Apart from AFS and university, I like to read (a lot), knit, walk, hike, cook and drink coffee. Can’t wait to meet you guys!
