Megavikend is a weekend-long international educational event, which belongs to one of the most important in the whole AFS year.

The volunteers not only from the Czech Republic, but also from all the other European countries, have a chance to meet new people and to pick up new skills during Friday’s welcoming programme, Saturday’s 6 hours-long and Sunday’s 3 hours-long workshop blocks.

The whole event is composed of workshops and lectures in both Czech and English. Each volunteer has the option to choose a course topic, that interests him/her the most and that will be the most beneficial to his/her theoretical and practical skills.

You can look forward a weekend packed up with great fun! The whole Megavikend is accompanied with supporting programme, and tons of games.

DATE: 18 – 20 OCTOBER 2019

Saturday tracks

Cook a team - become the Master Chef in the management and leadership kitchen! (EN)

Péťa a Adam

Are you one of those AFSers that happened or chose to be in a management position? Do you have or want to build up a team of people that will achieve amazing things? Have you thought about what motivates your team members? Why did they join the team in the first place? How to make the team long-term sustainable?

If you answered any of the above questions with a big YES or if they made you curious, come to our workshop where we will go through practical experience and theoretical background about:

  • What is a team and how to manage it
  • What is the role of a leader / manager
  • Volunteers’ needs and motivation – how to find out, how to satisfy them
  • Is delegating tasks always the best idea? When and how does it work and when does it fail?
  • How to specify and distribute tasks efficiently
  • How to help your people grow
  • Personality typology based on personal preferences (security, social, self-esteem)
  • How to make your team long-term sustainable

Just remember that nobody is born a great leader or a great manager – it is a skill like any other, so we believe that, like any other skill, it can be learned 🙂  This workshop will give you a lot of input and space for sharing your experience with other participants.

Social media and project management (EN)

Hanka and Karolina L.

Have you ever wondered about the backstage of AFS marketing communication? Would you like to discover the basis of online and offline strategy used by marketers? Are you interested in the reasons that make some posts more popular than the others?

During this workshop we’ll teach you the basics of visual style used within AFS, as well as how to create a simple promo through social networks or how to work with specific target groups across the organisation.

At the same time we’ll introduce you to the hidden secrets of AFS presentation for school meetups, often organised events etc… As the host you should support those who are not so experienced, have the whole event under your control and know how to engage with the public.

We’ll explain the importance of Facebook events, invitations, press news, how to gather the right number of people, materials or how to estimate the target group…We’ll guide you from the very first idea to the successful realization of the whole project.

Selling the AFS Effect - How to sell and discuss AFS with anyone (EN)

If you often have the feeling that AFS is a cult and nobody besides the other AFSers are interested in what we do and why we do it, this workshop might be for you! If you often have the feeling that we are struggling to find host families, participants or volunteers, this workshop might be for you!

Selling, bartering and discussion are not a bunch of tricks used by salespeople to make you buy the latest PlayStation or an expensive insurance. They are often useful in many other parts of life, and this workshop will help you. We will discover common sales techniques and see how to apply them best on an AFS experience, we will cover basic argumentation techniques so you can have a positive effect on someone’s ideas and much more.

Komunikace s (po)citem (CZ)

Danča a Tonda

From global to local impact (EN)

Each of us has value in the big picture. Let’s find out together how we can contribute to the lives of others and to the health of our planet.

Sunday workshops

Právo v praxi (CZ)

Lucka a Katka

Active Listening (EN)

Communication is the key? But don’t forget that communication is a two-way street. Active listening is a skill that can be acquired and developed. So let’s work on it together during this workshop! We will go through all the basic and practice listening with all our senses. Get ready for fun activities and more importantly learning in which situations is active listening most needed. We will also have a look at the use of it in the AFS context, interviews, being a contact person, debriefing activities, communicating with other volunteers, you name it!

Internet security (EN)

Who knows your password(s)? At which internet pages is it safe to enter sensitive information? How safe is email communication, IM, account sharing, email-based password reset, credit card online payment and the use of Google forms? How do cookies work and what happens when we accept them? And what is end-to-end encryption or electronic signature and should we trust it?

Ever wondered about those things? Join the workshop and use the chance to ask even more. I am a professional IT consultant who is looking forward to sharing his knowledge with you.

Get ready because to get the answers, we will need to learn about how the internet and websites actually work. Yup, deep stuff!

Why I am (not) a Feminist (EN)

We’re hearing a lot about feminism in the news, pop culture and in our society in general. The movement has its proponents with celebrities like Beyoncé, Emma Watson, Viola Davis and Mindy Kaling, but it has its fair share of ”haters” not ashamed to use insulting terms such as ”feminazi” and opponents criticizing feminism promoting equalism instead. But what does feminism actually mean and what does it stand for? We’re going to look at the origins of the feminist movement and its evolution, explore the values and motivation of feminists (Is it really to just hate men and run around with hairy armpits?) and discuss whether feminism is needed in today’s society. This workshop is meant for people who’d like to learn more and discuss about the role of feminism in today’s society from an objective point of view.

Lecturers in 2019

Péťa a Adam

Peťa became volunteer in 2012. Her AFS life began in Brno as usual volunteer and later on she became part of Chapter management in Brno. She took care mainly about orientations and other events for hosted students. Then she joined the Czech pool of trainers AFS, she is focused on PR. Currently she studies management and works in corporate education.

Adam has had a long track volunteering for AFS. After his exchange program in Germany, he joined local chapter in North Bohemia around his hometown Liberec. After being a chapter president, he became a trainer and trainer coordinator, and for two years, a national board member. He is also very proud of having been a part of the largest national education event called Megavikend.
His main focus within AFS currently lies in volunteer development. He likes designing and delivering trainings in management, design thinking, and intercultural topics.
Outside of AFS, Adam works as a programmer and researcher in machine learning and natural language processing. He also likes to talk into politics and dreams about becoming the minister of education one day 🙂

My AFS journey has started four years ago by an accidental click on a website. I am a coffee, books, food and social networks lover. Thanks to #afseffect the endless choice of the right filter and collecting hearts on Instagram has finally started to make sense to me.

Danča a Tonda

I have a three years experience in sales. Beside sales I am also engaged in online marketing for more than two years and I am finishing my master degree at University of economics, Prague with major in Management and minor in Management psychology. Generally I train Improving communication types of workshops (verbal and non-verbal communication basics and negotiations). In my free time I enjoy broadering my knowledge, participating in marketing and communication workshops or saving different kinds of animals. I love moving forward, mainly myself and ideally the others as well.

I have been volunteering with AFS for 8 years. My focus is on the development of the Czech Pool of Trainers, workshops methodology and communication. I am an IT professional, my focus is on software engineering and information security. Apart from that, I am a cooking lover, passionate camp leader, enthusiastic critical thinking supporter, and occasional hitchhiker.

I “met” AFS in 2010 when my daughter went to Belgium for an exchange program. We then hosted Eri from Japan. And since then, I am part of Prague Chapter and over time also a trainer.

At Megavíkendu you can get to know me as a relaxation techniques trainer for which I have certification. Psychology is part of my whole adult life. I also enjoy in-line skating, dancing, traveling, architecture and design. And when I’m at home, I do some handwork. You can see some of my work at Megavikend as well.

This year I’m celebrating my 10th year of AFS involvement, bringing me from a small city in Belgium to Finland, Norway and eventually the Czech Republic with many short stops on the way. Fun facts about myself: I have a university degree in Medieval Dutch Literature studies and I play the drums in a pop-metal coverband.

Lucka a Kačka

I started to travel around after spending one year with AFS in Chile, so in my spare time you can usually find me on another continent. I love freshly ground coffee, mountains, books and Latin America. During my studies at the Faculty of Law I started taking additional courses to get the permit to teach and gradually I started teaching it. I see the legal system as a useful tool and I would love to broaden the general knowledge of it.

I love wandering around the world. I love nature especially mountains and rivers. I am interested in education and I enjoy learning, so besides studying law I started taking additional courses to get the permit to teach. By occasional teaching of law I try to broaden the general knowledge of legal system in Czech society showing others that law does not have to be just incomprehensible and boring.

In 7 years with AFS I have tried many different activities. Currently I am working on the Czech AFS trainers team development and on camp activities. I say that as a job I do AFS in the business environment – I support expats that work in Prague by helping with visas and other requirements. Besides that I love working with youth and children, doing sports, taking photos, low-cost traveling and coffee.

During my studies I wasn`t sure what career would be right for me. So I took any chance to travel and live abroad. I discovered hygge in Denmark, unlimited fun in Italy, lack of freedom in China and Indian love in Spain. Even though I found my dream job in a media agency 3 years ago traveling remains a significant part of my life.

I got to know AFS thanks to an exchange in the picturesque town called Konstanz in the south of Germany. Since then I have been an active volunteer, I have organized and participated in many events and projects. One of the first events I participated in was Megavíkend. I would never say that one day I will find myself at Megavíkend as a trainer, but I am really looking forward to it! I am currently studying in Vienna and besides AFS I enjoy traveling, having deep discussions over coffee or wine and reading books about dinosaurs because dinosaurs are cool.

After hosting a couple of students, my son was ready for his journey and my home was really empty. So, I decided to become a volunteer and have something else to do. That was 12 years ago and little by little I got more and more involved.

During last three years, my main focus has been training and I have delivered lots of workshops at a local, national and international level and also became part of the staff in AFS ESP as volunteer training responsible for some months.

In my daily life, I’m a teacher and I loved travelling, meeting new people and discovering new places. One of my recent adventure has been spending a couple of weeks in the Trans Siberian train. It was really amazing!!!

Participantion fee includes accommodation, catering, and all the materials used during the event. The participation fee for foreign participants is 105 €.

The fees combined with the financial support from AFS Czech Republic enables for a professional implementation of the whole project, including visits of foreign participants.

Are you not sure that this is the right thing for you? Are you afraid of not knowing anyone? Loose all your insecurities and join us!
Megavikend will for sure amaze you and here is why:

1) it is one of the biggest AFS educational events from the whole Europe
2) workshops and trainings are run by experienced trainers
3) you will meet many interesting people, not only from the Czech republic
4) you will have a lot of fun and you will get to know the city like a local
5) and many more

This idea originated in 2007, when a group of young AFS volunteers decided to organize the first ever session of this educational event. For all the seasons, the goal of Megavikend remains the same – connect young people from the whole of Europe and let them educate themselves, share their knowledge, experience, tips and tricks, and thus participate on the development of our society. Every year, the event is visited by more than 120 participants from all around the globe. And you can be part of it!
