Saturday morning workshops

ENG: How our clothes were made👚

Tereza Volmutová a Jasna Cifrová, organization NaZemi

The production of our clothing is tied to many social and environmental issues. In this workshop, we’ll explore the topic, get to know the key actors involved, and examine the role we each play in the global fashion industry. We’ll also practice imagination as a crucial skill for envisioning a better clothing industry and the kind of world we want to live in – because if we can imagine it, we’ll be better equipped to create it.

ENG: Opportunities for Democratic Participation and Active Citizenship 🙋‍♀️

Nikola Šašurová, organization Agora Central Europe

How can we get involved in improving the place where we live through democratic participation? This workshop will demonstrate how citizens can actively contribute to community development and collaborate with public administration on specific projects. Participants will learn how to engage in dialogue with local institutions, propose changes, and become active contributors to the positive transformation of their surroundings.

ENG: Seeing the World More Clearly: Cognitive Biases and How to Challenge Them 🧠

Lea Polívková a Barbora Pelcová

Why do so many of us believe the world is getting worse – even when the data says otherwise? This workshop explores how media narratives and our own thinking shortcuts can distort our view of the world. You’ll learn about key concepts like heuristics and cognitive biases, and discover why even experts often answer global knowledge questions worse than chance. Through an interactive quiz, real-world examples, and group discussions, you’ll uncover common mental traps and how to recognize and challenge them. Gain tools to think more critically, reduce anxiety about global trends, and build a more balanced perspective on the world around you.

Saturday afternoon workshops 1. round

ENG: Myths and Facts About Travel, or What You Make of it, is What You Get ✈️

Jan Hotový

Why anyone can travel? What are pros and cons of travelling? Are there any opportunities or dangers involved? Traveller through the outer and inner world, sport addict and passionate gemstone collector Jan Hotový share his thoughts on travelling in today’s world and many more.

ENG: Bridging the Climate Gap: Active Global Citizenship for Environmental Justice 🌡️

Lea Polívková a Alec Herčík

(Three-hour workshop for the whole afternoon) How can we make sure that environmental action also promotes fairness and inclusion? In this workshop, participants will explore how active global citizenship connects with principles of equality and environmental justice. Together, we will unpack issues like environmental inequality, just transition, and climate responsibility across regions and communities. Through interactive discussions and collaborative activities, participants will dive into real-world dilemmas and broaden their understanding of the links between social justice and environmental action—and how to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.

ENG: Riders on the Storm - A Guide to Crisis Intervention ⛈️

Doruk Karaman

(Three-hour workshop for the whole afternoon) What do you do when everything feels out of control – either for you or someone close to you?
In this interactive workshop, we’ll discover ways to recognize a crisis, support each other and respond with calm, care and confidence. In games, role-plays, stories and creative activities, you’ll learn how to recognize what a crisis is (and why it happens), how to use simple, yet effective, steps to help yourself or a friend in need. You will also learn to make your own personal Crisis Response Toolkit and to feel braver, safer and more empowered.
Using psychological tools and non-formal learning methods, this 3-hour workshop provides you practical skills and shared strength.

Saturday afternoon workshops 2. round

ENG: Superpower Called Science: Question. Experiment. Understand. 🧪

Pavel Jan Linka

Ever wondered what it is like to be a scientist? Here you can try yourself! Science isn’t just about labs and textbooks – it’s a mindset for everyday life. In this workshop, we will explore how science helps us question, test, and understand the world around us (with a few fun experiments thrown in!). You will form hypotheses, test ideas, maybe get a little messy and present your findings to the others. We will also discuss the danger of scientific mis- and disinformation.

*Note: No advanced STEM skills are required, though a basic understanding (=high school level) of subjects like math, physics, chemistry or biology may be helpful.

Sunday morning workshops

ENG: Beyond Growth: Imagining Post-Capitalist Futures 🌍

Tadeáš Žďárský, organization Nazemi

We live in an age of crises – worsening climate crisis, unaffordable housing, widening inequalities, geopolitical conflicts, rising depression and burnout. While these issues may seem separate, much of the scientific community warns that they share a common cause: an economic system that prioritizes growth and profit over meeting people’s needs and protecting the planet. Capitalism isn’t working for us anymore. What would a degrowth economy look like – one that ensures everyone’s needs are met within planetary limits? Which policies and practices can lead us towards post-capitalist futures? Which is the bigger utopia – transforming the system, or continuing with the one we have now?

ENG: Psychohygiene: The Key to Happiness and Wellbeing 🙏

veronika Kučerová

Would you like to unlock the skill of taking care of your mental health? Have you ever felt anxious and didn’t know how to manage it? Or are you simply curious?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions – or you’re just a little interested – come join this workshop! Together, we’ll explore the basics of psychohygiene: to bring more balance into your daily life.

You’ll try out some simple exercises and spend some calm and meaningful time in a safe space.

ENG: Talk the Talk 🎤

Rivka Orlitová a Johan Paul

Imagine your favourite presenter, how charismatic they are and how naturally they talk… that won’t be you. Not yet anyway, but we will try to bring you a small step closer by trying out preprepared and improvised presentations, including feedback from us and other participants.

DID YOU KNOW...?

The numbers say it all! Look at the statistics of past years.

Dobrý den everyone,
My name is Doruk, im from Antalya, Turkey. I am based in Munich, Germany. My volunteering adventure started in 2016, after I came back from my exchange year. I attended several trainings both in AFS Turkey, AFS Germany, EFIL and in many different AFS countries. However, Megavikend is always one of the most special events to me and very excited to see and meet you all in Prague this year!

18

Veronika Kučerová

She started volunteering after three months in Italy with AFS. She also had the chance to take part in an Erasmus+ project in Germany. Now she’s diving into human resources at university. Besides school and volunteering, she enjoys spending time reading, art, music and fashion – all the little things that make life beautiful.

12

Pavel Jan Linka

Pavel is a university student and has been a member of AFS since 2023, when he returned from an exchange year in Germany. He studies Biochemistry – focusing on viruses, bacteria, and related topics – and is part of a research group working to combat antimicrobial resistance (when antibiotics no longer work). Pavel is also passionate about bringing science closer to high school students through the project Zvaž vědu! (“Consider Science!”). Outside his scientific pursuits, he enjoys road cycling and plays the trumpet in an orchestra.

13

Johan Paul

An AFS volunteer originally from Opava. He studied in Ostrava, Denmark, France, and South Korea. He enjoys procrastinating by reading plays, watching series or anime, playing computer games, or playing basketball. He sees AFS as a way to step out of his comfort zone and appreciates the opportunity to meet proactive people.

3

Barbora Pelcová

She went to Italy with AFS for half a year, and after returning, she couldn’t leave the AFS community behind – so she immediately started volunteering. She helps organize events and camps and became part of the training team. Outside of AFS, she’s mainly interested in Romance languages and enjoys dancing, books, and psychology.

9

Lea Polívková

She studies Environmental Studies and International Relations in Brno. Her volunteering journey with AFS began after she returned from an exchange program in Montana in 2021. Since then, she has taken on various volunteer roles, including facilitating trainings and workshops for fellow volunteers. She loves traveling, discovering new places, and spending time in nature or in cozy cafés and galleries with friends. She’s learning how to shoot on a film camera – whenever she has it in her hands, she’s happy and runs around like a little kid. She can’t wait to meet you at this year’s Megavíkend!
